Low FODMAP shrimp cocktail
This Dutch shrimp cocktail is a real classic! Here in Holland it is probably one of the most served starters for Christmas dinner. It is very simple: lettuce, shrimps and cocktail sauce, but most people love it and it is quick to make.
I had never made a low FODMAP shrimp cocktail with homemade cocktail sauce before, so it was time that I gave that a try. That’s what I did for this recipe!
I think this shrimp cocktail is an ideal starter for a dinner because it is so easy to make. You can prepare the cocktail sauce beforehand and then preparing the starter only takes 5 minutes. Easy ánd yummy!
Making low FODMAP cocktail sauce
I thought it was quite difficult to make cocktail sauce from scratch. Before I ate low FODMAP, I always bought it in the store, but it is actually really easy to make.
It tasted exactly how I remember cocktail sauce should taste. You whip 60 ml lactose-free whipping cream until it is half stiff with a pinch of salt and cayenne pepper.
Then you stir in 3 tbsp mayonaise and 2 tbsp ketchup and optionally 1 tbsp whisky. You season this with some pepper, salt and lemon juice and voilà, you have made cocktail sauce.
I didn’t have any whisky at home, so I left this out. Also without whisky, the cocktail sauce tastes great. So if you serve this dish to kids or want to make it alcohol-free for another reason, you can easily leave the whisky out.
