Is pineapple low FODMAP?

We can be brief about this: yes, pineapple is low FODMAP and you can eat it during the FODMAP diet.

A serving of 140 grams (1 cup) of fresh pineapple is low FODMAP. That’s a great portion as a snack or to use in a cake or dessert.

A serving of pineapple of 200 grams (1 1/4 cups) or more contains an average amount of fructans. That is why I would advise sticking to a portion of no more than 140 grams per meal in the elimination phase.

If you have tested fructans in the reintroduction phase and you know that you respond well to them, you can try increasing your portion.

Is canned pineapple low FODMAP?

Yes, canned pineapple also has a low FODMAP serving. You can only eat a little less of this than fresh pineapple.

It also matters whether you take canned pineapple in juice or syrup. Pineapple in juice usually contains pineapple juice, while pineapple in syrup is usually extra sweetened:

  • Canned pineapple in juice is low FODMAP up to a portion of 97 grams.
  • Canned pineapple in syrup is low FODMAP up to a portion of 67 grams.

These amounts might sound a bit weird to you, but this is how Monash University has mentioned them in the Monash University FODMAP app.

Is dried pineapple low FODMAP?

It is better to avoid dried pineapple in the elimination phase. A portion of 25 grams already contains an average amount of fructans and from 50 grams it contains a large amount of fructans.
